Bodie Island Lighthouse is an historic landmark within Cape Hatteras National Seashore on the Outer Banks (OBX) of North Carolina. Uniquely painted with horizontal black and white stripes, Bodie Island Lighthouse was given this daymark to distinguish the beacon from other lighthouses along the coast when viewed from a distance. At night, Bodie Island Lighthouse also features a unique nightmark, a pulsating light that could be used for similar purposes. On this autumn morning, a light radiant fog was clinging to the tall marsh grasses behind the structure, as can be seen here from the pedestrian boardwalk. Fog is slightly easier to form in coastal regions because of the salt in the air; Bodie Island often experiences this atmospheric phenomenon around the transitional months.
